Some Geeky Facts about ME!

According to Merriam-Webster, a “Geek” is “an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity.”

However, it has since becomes synonymous with “Nerd” (a person preoccupied with or devoted to a particular activity or field of interest), and the two are often used interchangeably.

That means today should be called “National Embrace Your Nerdiness Day” instead of “Embrace your Geekness Day,” but we work with what we’ve got.

So, in honor of “National Embrace Your Geekness Day – Jul. 13, 2026,” here are some fun nerdy/geeky facts about Me!

Fact 1: I Love Video Games.

Video games weren’t a huge part of my life until 2009 when my husband introduced me to World of Warcraft. That became our thing, and we spent MANY nights partying up and completing quests, defeating dungeons (and the occasional raid, which I was not good at), and building an online life together.

Since then, I’ve played a variety of games and have a solid appreciation for graphics, gameplay, and overall story. I also love conspiracies, lore, and easter eggs about the game because they make the experience richer (and I enjoy *knowing* things lol).

To solidify my point, here are my top 10 video games that I always recommend.

  1. Skyrim– It has everything! Magic, combat, relationships, story, atmosphere, mystery, and DRAGONS.
  2. Subnautica– Survival crafting in an alien ocean full of monsters. What could go wrong?
  3. 7 Days to Die– Open world Zombie survival. Need I say more?
  4. Fable 2– A rich, story-driven game where your choices affect the world.
  5. Fable 3– Fulfil your destiny and overthrow your brother like a true HERO.
  6. Portal– Enter the world of Aperture Science and see how long you survive.
  7. Portal 2– Survive the tests while solving the mystery of GLaDOS and Aperture Science.
  8. Sunset Overdrive– A fast-paced, irreverent take on the apocalypse. Grind and bounce your way to survival!
  9. Minecraft– A classic with infinite possibilities.
  10. Fallout– Specifically 3 and 76. I love the story of 3, but the freedom of 76. And who wouldn’t want to try their hand at surviving a nuclear war?
  11. BONUS mention- Baldur’s Gate 3. Stellar graphics, amazing voice acting, and all the D&D your heart desires.

Fact 2: I read comics and manga

I don’t collect many of them, but the ones I do own, I’ve read more than once.

They include:

  • Hellsing Deluxe 1 and 2
  • Hellboy Omnibus 1 and 2
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer 1-3 (and 1 of a seperate series)
  • Serenity (I think book 2 of the continuation)
  • Two Hellblazer collections (plus 2-3 individual comics)
  • Several Elektra comics (She’s my favorite Marvel character aside from Wolverine)

I also have two manga collections from Junji Ito and plan to get more because the man knows his horror!

I also plan to get the manga books for some of my favorite anime shows, which sends us into our next fact:

Fact 3: I love Anime!

Despite popular opinion, anime is not just for kids. Some shows take on heavy themes, while others focus on a more whimsical and light theme, and there’s an anime for everyone.

My top ten that I’ve watched until the end are:

  1. Blood+– My all-time favorite. A girl with amnesia learns she’s the only hope for saving the world- if she can only control herself first.
  2. Soul Eater– Weapons and their meisters learn how to work together to save the world. Equal parts funny and dark.
  3. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood– Two brothers set off on a journey to learn alchemy, save the world, and get their bodies back. It’s way darker than it sounds.
  4. Cowboy Bebop– A bounty hunter in space? A killer jazz intro? Mystery, murder, and intrigue? Say less.
  5. RWBY– When training to be a huntress, you need a strong team of friends at your back! Otherwise, you will fail.
  6. Inuyasha– A girl travels back to feudal Japan and befriends a half-demon while helping save her world from the past.
  7. Attack on Titan– When your home is overrun by man-eating titans, the only thing you can do is fight back.
  8. Hellsing Ultimate– The Hellsing organization fights vampires, monsters, and Nazis with their secret weapon.
  9. Silver Spoon– A city boy enrolls in a farm school and has to rethink everything he knows about life.
  10. Your Lie in April– A slice-of-life about a kid who joins a musical academy and meets his soulmate.

These are the anime shows I return to again and again, and there are some that I’m currently working through (like Avatar: the Last Airbender and One Piece) that I haven’t finished yet.

Fact 4: I Play D&D

I don’t have a dedicated group, unfortunately, but I have participated in several one-offs. Bard is my usual class because I love the improv capabilities, but I also enjoy playing Hunters and Fighters.

I also like to name/ base my characters off the people in my stories, and it’s a great way to test some of their decision-making skills- or lack thereof, depending on how merciful the dice are.

Conclusion: I’m a Nerd!

This is the tip of the iceberg, as I’ve been known to “geek out” about certain book series, poetry, musicals, herbs, and a host of other random things.

But, no matter what label you put on it- be it Geek, Nerd, or otherwise- it’s just another part of what makes me unique.

And I wouldn’t change a thing!

What do you “geek” out about? Let me know in the comments!

And happy “National Embrace Your Geekness Day!” Celebrate safely 🙂
