When I was a kid
I came home from school
And my parents thought
It’d be super cool
If we moved to Alaska,
That northern Jewel,
For a new job
My dad could rule.
But I wouldn’t go
And thought it cruel-
My tears fell fast
Like a whirlpool.
Their faces changed,
They felt awful.
They hugged me quick
And were careful
To reassure me
Their ridicule
Was nothing more
Than a bad leg-pull.
I calmed my sobs
And wiped my drool
Not understanding
This new earful
But my parents rose
With faces full
And together screamed
“April Fools!”
This poem is based on a true story!
When I was around 6, I came home from school and found my parents waiting for me in the yard. They were excited and promptly announced that my dad had gotten a job in Alaska and we were moving.
After a moment of processing, I began to cry because I didn’t want to leave my friends and family behind.
It’s funny now, but that was the first April Fool’s prank I remember.
Thanks, Mom and Dad! 😁
