When working a job or trying to grow in your preferred field, you generally want to appear professional to the people you work with. But what does that mean?
Professionalism is the “the skill, good judgment, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well.” (Merriam-Webster)
However, that won’t apply to everyone in the business (or creative) world, which is why I wanted to give you a head start on growing your professional image with these key tips.
They are:
- Reliability
- Communication
- Knowledge
- Respect
Reliability
The first step in growing your professional image is proving to others that you’re reliable. That means showing up on time, meeting deadlines, making good decisions, and keeping your word when you offer to help.
Being reliable (or dependable, if you want to use the popular synonym) is a great way to build trust among your peers, strengthen relationships, and gain respect among others in your field- which, in turn, can lead to promotions and other career opportunities.
However, being reliable also has a downside, and others may try to take advantage of you by increasing the task load or getting you to help with things beyond your scope. That’s why it’s also important to set professional boundaries- like ending the day at the same time, or refusing to take on x amount of hours per week.
Communication
Communication is essential for any type of relationship, and learning how to communicate effectively is a great way to grow your professional reputation.
To communicate more professionaly, try to:
- Be clear and concise- no unnessecary fluff or convoluted language
- Be direct and address key information first
- Practice actively listening to the responses
- Tailor your language to the audience
- Be mindful of non-verbal communication (facial expressions, body language, etc.)
- Be respectful
It seems like a long list, but these are easy skills that you can learn with practice. And, since communication is essential to every career path, learning these skills will greatly benefit you you the long run.

Knowledge
If you’re trying to grow your professionalism, you have to keep up with the advancements in your field. By increasing your knowedge, you can communicate better ideas, amplify your current abilities, teach others something new, increase your adaptability, and boost your critical thinking skills.
You can also gain a reputation as the go-to person for information, which can lead to new opportunities, new relationships, and a new outlook on life in general.
Plus, gaining that knowledge is easier than ever with the help of the internet. Or, if you need more specific information, you can check out your local library for help. If they don’t know it, they’ll know who does!
Respect
Respect is the “feeling or understanding that someone or something is important, serious, etc., and deserves appropriate treatment or regard” (Merriam-Webster), and that is definitely something that you want to cultivate within your field of expertiese.
However, to gain respect, you have to give respect.
To give respect, listen to others without judgment, appreciate their knowledge and experience, and treat them how you’d like to be treated. Even if they don’t have relevant information or promote outdated ideas, you can show them respect in the moment.
Remember- you can only control your actions and emotions. And, if you prove to be a respectful, knowedgable, reliable person, others will begin to respect you.
These are the key elements of any professional relationship, and using them can help you grow beyond the initial boundaries of business and boost your professional reputation in no time.
What’s more, a healthy professional life can often lead to a more fulfilling personal life- and that’s something worth cultivating!
