My Badge of Honor

My trauma doesn’t define me.

It is not the standard
By which I define myself

It is not the lens
Through which I see my worth

It is not the driving force
Behind my actions

And it is not the writer
Of my story

My trauma is nothing
But a silver badge-

A medal of honor-

And I’ll wear it proudly
Until the silver tarnishes
And the rough edges are worn away

And it no longer clings
To my uniform
