Rise up with dawn’s early light,
See the frost upon the sill,
A million diamonds in your sight,
With their shine let your hearts fill.
See your breath upon the wind,
See how it floats away,
How its life, so short, will end,
As we all must do someday.
See the snow, so soft and white,
Falling around your feet,
And a little flake so full of might,
Gently kisses your face in greet.
As the sun sets upon this winter world,
The trees all burst into flame,
As all of heaven is unfurled,
And nothing ever seems the same.
So rest your weary head tonight,
For tomorrow holds a promise,
And dawning with the morning light,
You’ll once again feel winters cold kiss.
I wrote this poem in 2008, and I wanted to share it as a raw, unedited glimpse into my early years of poetry.
I’ve learned a lot since then!
