Asylum

This should have been a refuge
For the helpless and distressed
So we can fight our demons
And compel them to egest

This should have been a haven
With professionals in white
Ready to give care and keep
Us from fading in our plight

This should have been a harbor
But something has gone awry
Trapping me within these walls
After I was sent to spy

This should have been a shelter
But experiments abound
Lobotomies are common
And electroshocks confound

This should have been a safe place
But the patients live in fear
Of being the next victim
To covertly disappear

They call this an asylum
But it’s now a living hell
And I’ve written my findings
On the bones of this old cell

We should have had protection
But instead, we were abused
And now that my time has come
I hope you’ll spread the news
