The Scarecrow’s Lament

I never asked to be filled with straw
To stand for hours in a barren field
Arms outstretched to the crows
As they caw laughter

I never asked to be remade
With nothing left inside
But this bleeding heart
Wrapped in a flannel shirt

I only wanted to learn
To talk with those above me
And gain their wisdom
On what it means to be human

But I’m stuck in this field
Brainless, useless
Waiting for these ropes to break
So I can finally fall apart

The prompt for this poem was “write a poem from a famous character’s point of view.”
I chose the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz, and this is my interpretation.
What’s yours?
