Have you ever wondered what it would be like to marry someone from a different country? Maybe you vacationed in Italy and fell in love with a passionate Italian, or met an exchange student in college who's culture intrigued you. Whatever the case may be, marrying someone outside of your culture can be tricky, and the subjects of Loving an Alien are here to tell you why. Loving an Alien by Angela Nicoara is a collection of true stories about women who fell in love with a foreigner. These Question and Answer sessions between the author and the women in these relationships are detailed and touch on the various topics of dealing with a spouse from a different country. One of the best things about this book is how open and candid the questions are. The author asks them how they met, what they thought of their spouse's home countries, how they dealt with the different cultures, what they had to sacrifice to make the marriage work, the differences in religious beliefs, favorite traditional recipes, and more. The whole book reads like a conversation between friends; it's casual, humorous, and touches on the raw emotions that one might have when marrying someone from a different culture. And some of these cultures are hard to mix. For example, one of the couples is Chinese and Italian, another is Albanian and Austrailian, and yet another is Brazilian and Mauritian. These are just a few of the various couplings explored in this book, and each one is unique and gives us a good look into cultures that might be beyond our own. It reminds me of my own marriage. I didn't marry a foreigner, but my husband and I have vastly different cultural backgrounds, and that does affect our marriage in subtle ways. I give this book a solid 4 out of 5. It's a great experiment into why we choose the partners we do, and while it can read a bit choppy at times because of the conversational element, it was a great book overall. If you've married an "alien," or know someone who has, this book might just be for you.
